Nibali
wins Stage 20 in the snow at the Giro d'Italia
Tre
Cime di Lavaedo, 25 Maggio 2013 - Astana
Pro Team rider VIncenzo Nibali won stage
20 at the Giro d'Italia on Saturday, riding
away solo on a mountain in a snowstorm.
Nibali
won the 210km stage from Silandro to Tre
Cime di Lavaredo by 17 secons ahead of Fabio Duarte
of Colombia, and was alone at the finish line to raise
his arm in a victory salute.
"We
only really felt the snow today in the final 5 km.
Thankfully the road was pretty clean, and the stage
turned into a real epic, with an uphill finish in
thick snow fall.
The
manner of my win today leaves me with feelings of
immense joy. And when have you ever seen riders finish
the Giro dItalia with no sun tan, and wearing
arm and leg warmers? In the cold, you have to limit
yourself, with or without climbs,"
Nibali said.
Nibali
saw race podium positions behind him shift, as long-time
rival Cadel Evans of
Australia slipped off the pace, while Colombian rider
Rigoberto Uran moved
up in the standings, and is now in second place, 4:43
behind Nibali.
"Only
something truly great could have capped my Vuelta
win, and this Giro dItalia victory gives
me that extra something. The final stage is tomorrow,
but it should end in a sprint, so Im already
very happy. However, Ill need some time to put
it all together and to make sense of what we have
achieved here. Ive proved that Im a good
Grand Tour rider, and this win in the Giro is special,"
Nibali said.
Generale Cadel Evans (BMC).
Uran
maglia rosa Vincenzo Nibali
(Astana).
Nibali
è riuscito a distanziare negli ultimi 2 chilometri
Cadel Evans.
Nibali
ha trionfato con 17 di vantaggio sul più
immediato degli inseguitori mentre Uran
è salito fino al secondo posto in Classifica
Generale a 4'43 dall'italiano.
a Mark Cavendish (Omega
Pharma Quick Step).
quinto posto in Classifica Generale.
Croci Pavel Brutt (Katusha)
A
quel punto Eros Capecchi (Movistar), Pieter
Weening (Orica-GreenEDGE) e Gianluca Brambilla
rosa.
Giro
d'Italia, Stage 20: Fight To The Finish
25.05.2013, Tre Cime di Lavaredo, Italy
Cadel
Evans of the BMC Racing Team fought to the finish
Saturday in snow and freezing conditions to hold onto
a spot on the podium with one day to go at the Giro
d'Italia.
Technical
Problem Plagues Evans
Evans finished 14th, 1:30 behind stage winner
and race leader Vincenzo Nibali (Astana Pro
Team), while conceding 1:11 to Rigoberto Uran
(Sky Procycling), who finished third to move into
second overall. Nibali launched his decisive
attack in the last three kilometers of the 203-km
race that finished atop Tre Cime di Lavaredo.
Evans was riding with the group chasing Nibali
when disaster struck. "I
had a technical problem at two kilometers to go all
the way to the finish and that cost me second place,"
Evans said. Between kilometers two
and one, Evans lost 33 seconds to Uran
and stage runner-up Fabio Duarte (Colombia)
and an additional 28 seconds in the final kilometer.
"He tried to resolve
the technical issue, but the severe weather and the
nature of the problem prevented him from doing so
and it cost him valuable time," BMC
Racing Team President/General Manager Jim Ochowicz
said.
BMC
Racing Team Assistant Director Fabio Baldato
said it was a shame because Evans had been
riding well up to that point.
"All day, Cadel had good legs,"
Baldato said. "For
sure, second was better than third. But we are still
on the podium and tomorrow we need to control to make
the race safe and then the goal is reached."

Giro
dItalia, 20^tappa: Scarponi 4° e Niemiec
6° nella generale
sabato, 25 maggio 2013 -
Betancur, assestandosi così in 6°
posizione (+743?).
fare nulla.
Massima attenzione domani, per completare una Corsa
Rosa per me da sogno.
Goosebumps
Colombia! Duarte 2nd, Atapuma 9th in epic Giro stage
FabioDuarte
25-05-2013
- Andres
Botero, the Director of
Coldeportes, Minister of Sports in Colombia,
landed in Italy on Friday night, nurturing the hope
to see a good display from the Team his Institute
wanted and created barely a year and a half ago. If
you look at Boteros eyes after the race, you
understand he has got much more than that. In a day
in which Vincenzo Nibali (Astana) challenged another
snowstorm to take his second stage win and reaffirm
his domination on the Giro dItalia, Fabio Duarte
and Darwin Atapuma were protagonist of an outstanding
display, bringing excitement to the race and to the
millions of people Colombians or not
who were so lucky to assist to an unforgettable day
for Colombian cycling.
Fabio
Duarte took second, 17 seconds behind Nibali,
after outsprinting fellow Countrymen Rigoberto
Uran (Team Sky), who climbed
to second in GC, and Carlos Betancur
(Ag2r), who got back the leadership of the young
riders classification, while Darwin Atapuma
was ninth, just 1 minute behind Nibali, at the
end of an incredible and exciting display, moving
on the attack twice on the day and still showing the
strength to hold on with some of the strongest GC
contenders of this Giro. Tomorrow, El Puma will finish
his first Giro dItalia in 18th position.
Before
of that, four man had animated the early part of the
210 km effort from Silandro to Tre Cime
di Lavaredo, but the real show was to happen on
the only two climbs remained out of the original route:
the Passo Tre Croci and the Tre Cime di
Lavaredo, where a snowstorm once again greeted
the riders in their final mountain effort of the Giro.
Team Colombia showed its commitment to go for
a result on the day taking the lead of the bunch with
40 km to go, with an outstanding effort by Wilson
Marentes and Leonardo Duque.
Later on, Darwin Atapuma
moved on the attack near the top of the Passo
Tre Croci, trying to put some margin between himself
and the bunch, but the reaction from Saxo Bank
trying to take advantage of a mechanical by
Carlos Betancur closed on the attempt.
Still,
when it came to the final 7 km climb, Darwin
once again tried to get back on the frontrunners with
a strong attack along with Pirazzi
(Bardiani) and Kieserlowski
(RadioShack). To close on him and everyone ahead it
needed an action by the strongest man in this Giro,
Vincenzo Nibali,
who got clear of everyone. Under heavy snow, a trio
of Colombian formed at the chase Uran, Betancur
and Fabio Duarte, who rode an incredibly smart
climb, always trying not to do too much but putting
his incredible class to good use, eventually dropping
Cadel Evans and bridging back to his Colombian
countrymen. In the end, Duarte proved the fastest
of the three in the final metres, taking an outstanding
result that made everyone in the Team extremely proud.
We
were just close to make a great gift to our team staff,
sponsors and supporters in Colombia and all
around the World, but I still think we gave them some
reason to be happy today Fabio
Duarte said afterwards. The
fact that such performance came in front of Coldeportes
President Botero makes it even more important:
we are always willing to show that this project is
worth the great effort they put in, and hopefully
it will keep growing in the years to come.
Those
guys out there were flying today
an overawed Sports Director Valerio Tebaldi
said you know, we
had planned to make our best today and give it all
to finally clinch a stage, but I dont think
we could have asked anything more to them today. The
team has been outstanding, taking control of the race
at the foot of the climbs and with Fabio and
Darwin taking responsibility to go for a result.
They were feeling great, and we got just a little
bit short of a win on the most beautiful stage of
the Giro. I think many have seen the real value
of our team today
Coldeportes
Director Andres Botero also expressed his pride
in seeing the team riders showing up strong in what
was arguably the most spectacular stage of the Giro:
We strongly believed
in this project from the very beginning, and had to
go through some tough opposition, but the teams
display and results at the Giro show that the
value of Colombian cycling really deserved a Team
to give it the opportunity to show. Now we want this
progression to continue, and hopefully we will see
Team Colombia racing a Grand Tour again
soon.
Tomorrow,
Sunday 26th May, the final stage expect the riders,
Riese Pio X Brescia of 197 Km. It will
be a sprinters stage, and after managing to
complete his very first grand tour with an outstanding
effort, Edwin Avila will
definitely try his luck along with Leonardo Duque.
Colombias bid for a stage is not over yet.
