Giro
d'Italia Stage 6: Cavendish, OPQS Win for Wouter Weylandt
99 Victories for the Manx Missile
09-May-2013
-
Omega Pharma - Quick-Step Cycling Team rider
Mark Cavendish was dropped off for the sprint
with 170m to go at the end of the 169km flat Giro
d'Italia Stage 6 on Thursday, winning the stage
that he soon dedicated to the memory of Wouter Weylandt.
The entire team worked for him all day long, not only
controlling breaks and protecting him, but also moving
him into perfect position in the final kilometer.
OPQS
rider Gert Steegmans was Cav's final leadout
man, bringing him perfectly up the middle of the scrambling
peloton to launch his sprint. Elia Viviani
(Cannondale ProCycling Team) was 2nd, and Matthew
Goss (Orica-GreenEDGE) 3rd.
Cavendish
rushed to embrace his teammates after the win.
"I'm
so happy right now, it was incredible," Cavendish
said immediately after the victory.
"The leadout was absolutely perfect, nothing
went wrong, it was beautiful. I'm absolutely buzzing.
Imagine you have a kit car, something you've built
from the start as we have this year with the leadout.
You start it, 'vroom vroom' and you know, you have
some fears about it, all those things having been
put together, about being able to start the engine.
I'm just the last part, the last one that makes the
most noise. But when it works! That's how you can
win. I also want to dedicate this win to Wouter
Weylandt, who died tragically at the Giro two
years ago."
This
is the 26th win for OPQS, in three disciplines, in
2013. This is also the ninth UCI win for Cavendish,
and the second of the Giro d'Italia. He now has 99
career wins.
"It
was 100 percent beautiful today, and not just the
leadout— from the beginning," Cavendish
said. "Bobridge and
Wurf were two strong guys to have in the breakaway
today. We had Serge Pauwels and Gianluca Brambilla
pulling from the beginning and we were going strong.
Really, really well and they kept going until the
last kilometers. Then Jerome Pineau, Michal Golas,
Iljo Keisse, and Matteo Trentin took over, and even
Julien Vermote came up after getting dropped. He's
a young guy and he really rode today. These guys rode
until their legs couldn't go anymore. It was really
incredible to see that, and this is all before the
leadout. I haven't seen riding like this in about
a year. Today made me so, so proud."
"Then
the leadout was very, very hectic,"
Cavendish continued. "With
the crash it made everybody nervous. All the GC teams
were there with even less than 3km to go, like BMC
Racing Team and Sky, as well as the sprint teams.
It was real, real chaos. I just tried to follow Gert
Steegmans. He found my territory and then they timed
it perfectly. There was always going to be a team
that went too early with a headwind finish. My guys
waited, waited, they were patient and they hit it
at exactly the right time. They just went fast, fast,
fast and they launched me perfectly and I was able
to go to the line. I was really happy with it. Gert
Steegmans showed today that when he's at his best,
he's nearly the best leadout man there's ever been."
Giro,
Viviani ancora bravo ma ancora secondo
9
maggio 2013- Elia
Viviani regala
Tutti i velocisti puntavano a esserci
Ultimo
pensiero di giornata è per ricordare Wouter
Weylandt, scomparso sulle strade del Giro proprio
due anni fa. " impossibile
dimenticarlo. Sulla strada siamo tutti avversari ma
il ciclismo è una grande famiglia. Oggi in
118 km d'avventura.
MODOLO
CHIUSO IN VOLATA
Viviani (Cannondale) e Bohuanni (FDJ).
ripartivano fortunatamente senza infortuni.
"Era
Giro,
Avila sprints to 11th in crash-marred day
09-05-2013
-
On cards, the 6th stage of the Giro d'Italia
was arguably the easiest of those included in
the first week of the Corsa Rosa. Instead,
the almost pan-flat route from Mola di Bari to
Margherita di Savoia (170 km) caused plenty of
difficulties for several teams, with a number of crashes
happened in the final part of the race.
Team
Colombia's Edwin Avila did a good job to move
into the top-15 in the mass sprint won by Mark
Cavendish (Omega Pharma-Quickstep) ahead of Elia
Viviani (Cannondale) and Matt Goss Matt Goss
(Orica-GreenEdge). El Kalimeno finished
11th despite being unable to rely to any teammate
support, as the most of his fellow Team Colombia
riders had been either involved or held back by
a mass crash happened with 30 km to go. "
I was feeling very strong at the end, but it was very
hectic out there" Avila said
" and I could hardly find a gap to move forward".
Actually
I thought I had less energy after three days with
over 200 km, since it's the first time I do that in
my career, but I had very good legs instead: I could
have finished even better, no doubt I will try again.
Italian
Luca Paolini held on the pink jersey for the 4th
day in a row.
A long break by Australians Cameron Wurf (Cannondale)
and Jack Bobridge (Blanco) never really had
a chance in a stage clearly destined for a bunch sprint.
Nevertheless, the number of crashes into the final
60 km caused plenty of drama in the run-in. Leonardo
Duque, Wilson Marentes and Fabio Duarte
all went down on the day, only the latter suffering
abrasions and a cut on his right knee that was sutured
right after the race.
Despite losing time due to the crash, Team Colombia
stack together and did an excellent team work to allow
leaders Darwin Atapuma and Fabio Duarte
to finish comfortably in the bunch, with the same
time of Mark Cavendish.
General
Manager Claudio Corti was glad his team managed
escape such a day almost unscathed: "We
thought this stage could prove tricky due to the wind,
but we never expected so many crashes to happen. Fabio
had his knee scratched again, but fortunately everyone
managed to finish the race without severe injuries
or time losses. It was good to see them work strong
as a team to bring everyone back"
"Anyway,
once again Avila showed his great quality as a sprinter,
just shy of a top 10 with a very good effort. I think
everybody will learn to know him pretty"
;
Tomorrow, a very tough route expects the rider in
the 7th stage, Marina di Salvo-Pescara of 177
km: a medium mountain stage with four categorized
climbs and almost no flat sections will call attackers
to the fore ahead of Saturday's time trial test.
