IL PERCORSO Giorno della verità giovedì 26 maggio per la 17 a tappa. Si va da Varazze a Limone Piemonte, in realtà in cima al Colle di Tenda al confine con la Francia. In partenza il Cadibona, poi da Borgo San Dalmazio è tormento per chi non ama le salite. Dalla strada per il Colle della Maddalena si svolta per la Madonna del Colletto, di nuovo a Borgo San Dalmazio poi a Boves per il Colletto del Moro dal quale si scende a Robilante per salire a Limone Piemonte e poi affrontare il Colle di Tenda (ultimi 6 km con pendenza media dell'11%) che il Giro non ha mai percorso.

Il ritorno di Basso - "Ivan il terribile" fa sua la 17ª tappa Simoni scala la classifica con un'azione sul Colle di Tenda; adesso Gibo è 2° in compagnia del sorprendente Rujano - Di Luca comincia a cedere in salita e scende al 4° posto - domani la crono e sabato il Colle delle Finestre per l'attesissimo epilogo dell'88° Giro d'Italia © Photo Andrea Magnani 17ª tappa Giro: Fantastic Victory for Basso Limone Piemonte, 26 maggio 17:11 - After having suffered a stomach bug earlier this week, Team CSC's Ivan Basso on Thursday showed why he chose to continue in the Giro d'Italia. Basso escaped from the lead group on the last climb of the tough mountain stage from Varazze to Limone Piemonte and finished more than one minute ahead of José Rujano (Selle Italia) and Gilberto Simoni (Lampre). Paolo Savoldelli (Discovery Channel) retained his overall lead. ”Today I proved, that we meant business, when we made the decision for me to continue in this race. I've known all along, that I'm a strong climber – maybe the strongest one here. And today I wanted to win without having to sprint for it. After my bad luck I had only one thing on my mind: To win in Limone Piemonte. I said this to Bjarne already on Stelvio. Now I did it, and it's a big relief both for me and my team. The whole group did a tremendous job for me today, and they all deserve a big thanks. I began this race almost three weeks ago with an ambition to win. That wasn't meant to be, and a stage win can't change that fact – but that's all behind me now. This victory says a lot about how much I've developed as a rider. A development owed first and foremost to Bjarne,” said Ivan Basso after the 194 kilometer stage. ”Ivan deserves this win so much, and it was great to see him pull thru. We've done all we can to stay motivated, and that was one of the things, which made today possible. Everyone could see, that Ivan is by far the strongest in the mountains. We have bounced back after a big blow, and that is worth a lot to us. It's also important to remember, that there's still a time trial and a tough mountain stage to go and no one should doubt the fact, that we're aiming to win both,” said Bjarne Riis team-csc.com Basso the day, Paolo still in pink, and Simoni/Rujano make a move up the GC ladder by Chris Brewer After several attempts and the usual re-sorting of who can go and who must stay, 14 men were down the road and the race settled into its standard pacing. While Discovery Channel had the point early on monitoring the lead group, soon Lampre (for Simoni) and CSC (for an apparently rejuvenated Basso) came to the fore. First up was the 7 km Madonna del Coletta, a nasty effort that split up the lead men down to 6 as the main pack, lead by Damiano Cunego, lurked 2’40” back. DC and CSC were still up front as they descended towards the real work of the day. The initial assault was on the 3 km Colletto del Moro, nothing too dramatic but as Cunego came to the front with Simoni he set a blistering pace that quickly sent those not able to contend off the back. Basso foreshadowed his renewed form though as he lead the peloton – what was left of it – over the top and down the descent to the base of the 25 km climb to the finish. As the men rolled upward to Limone Piemonte the lead men were absorbed and it was Basso’s teammate Schleck setting the early pace. With 20 km left in the day, really good news for Paolo Savoldelli as Schleck lead Basso and several others away from all the GC contenders and gapping to about 1’40”. One thing the GC riders would not have liked was for Simoni to have jumped across onto the Basso train. Knowing Gibo was going to attack was bad enough, but to have Basso launch him – that would not have been acceptable. With 6 kms left Basso simply rode away from everyone, showing the form he had earlier before a stomach virus took him down but not completely out of the 2005 Giro. A km later and it was Simoni finally taking off, and it was only the diminutive climber Rujano who could stay on his wheel. Savoldelli did not panic though, with time left in the stage and he stayed within himself. Even if Simoni could gain back some time, it was almost a certainty he’d lose it back again in the 34 km Time Trial tomorrow. Up on the front it was Basso simply winning easily, never even once coming out of the saddle. Rujano and then Simoni rolled in 1’06” later then Paolo 42” after them. While Simoni and Rujano would move up to 2 and 3 respectively as a result of their effort, Danilo Di Luca was bumped off the podium to 4th as he finished 1’44” back to the duo. So a solid day for most all of the main men in the Giro d’Italia – the race of truth is tomorrow, and then the hellish stage 19 is Sat! Diciassettesima tappa, Simoni è ora secondo alla generale… Limone Piemonte, 26 maggio Oggi c’era la prima delle tre tappe importanti dell’ultima settimana, decisiva per la classifica. Come previsto, il Team Lampre-Caffita è stato molto attivo durante tutta la tappa. Così Damiano Cunego: "Stava nel piano di Martinelli che io facessi il ritmo sul Colletto del Moro, l’azione serviva per scremare il gruppo ancora troppo unito" ha spiegato il nostro giovane corridore. Risultato: in cima del Gran Premio della montagna del Colletto del Moro il gruppo è forte di una ventina di unità e Gilberto passa in seconda posizione dietro a Ivan Basso. -Mentre un gruppettino di 6 unità e nel quale si trova anche Ivan Basso parte all’attacco nell’ultima salita, Gilberto Simoni aspetta i 6 all’arrivo per portare un attacco decisivo che lascia i principali rivali dietro (l’unico a poter seguire il suo ritmo è Rujano). I due guadagnano terreno nei confronti dei principali avversari e, all’arrivo, giungono appena dopo il vincitore, Basso, e prendono 42’’ a Savoldelli e 1’43’’ a Di Luca. Gilberto conquista il secondo posto in classifica generale. - "Usciamo dalla prima delle tre tappe decisive con un buon bilancio – ha detto il Direttore Tecnico della Lampre-Caffita Giuseppe Martinelli. - Siamo riusciti a guadagnare una posizione in classifica e Simoni è a meno di un minuto dalla maglia rosa. Pensavamo che la salita sarebbe stata più dura dato che, nelle giornate di ricognizione effettuate alla fine di marzo, non eravamo riusciti a vedere gli ultimi 5 km di salita per la neve presente sulla strada. Ora pensiamo alla crono di domani”. Domani 18a Tappa Crono Individuale da Chieri a Torino km34 GIANNI SAVIO: "A QUESTO PUNTO SOGNARE NON COSTA NULLA..." Giornata positiva in casa Selle Italia - Colombia - Univer, con l'arrivo in salita a Limone Piemonte si rivedono i Savio's Boys. Ivan Parra è stato protagonista con il prezioso lavoro a favore di Josè Rujano sul Colletto del Moro. Nell'ascesa finale a Limone Piemonte il corridore Venezuelano è stato l'unico a restare in compagnia di Gilberto Simoni all'inseguimento di Ivan Basso. Rujano ha così guadagnato secondi preziosi su tutti i principali contendenti, facendo un balzo in classifica al terzo posto. Questa sera lo scalatore venezuelano è terzo in classifica a 1'24''. Gianni Savio ha dichiarato :"Dopo la bella prova di oggi di Josè Rujano ed Ivan Parra la nostra squadra sta vivendo un momento magico, per noi sognare non costa nulla e quindi attendiamo con ansia i prossimi due giorni in cui potrà accadere davvero di tutto" DI LUCA NON SI ARRENDE: “DARO’ BATTAGLIA FINO A MILANO” Il leader del Pro Tour 4° in classifica generale Limone Piemonte, 26 maggio - La 17a tappa da Varazze a Limone Piemonte ha ripagato almeno in parte la sete di vittoria di Ivan Basso che si è imposto sul Colle di Tenda davanti a Rujano e Simoni. Danilo Di Luca ha dovuto cedere alcuni secondi in classifica generale ed ora è 4° ad 1’26” dalla maglia rosa Paolo Savoldelli. Il Killer non ha però intenzione di abbassare le armi: «Milano rimane molto vicina, e non mi riferisco solo alla distanza geografica. Sul Colletto del Moro ho scollinato già affaticato ed ho capito che non sarebbe stata una giornata facile. Quando gli altri sono scattati ho cercato di contenere i danni e credo di esserci riuscito. Il podio rimane un obiettivo alla mia portata anche se sono consapevole che i miei rivali si stanno facendo sempre più attenti. Vedo particolarmente bene Gilberto Simoni in salita, ma l’uomo da battere rimane il “Falco”, Paolo Savoldelli» ¡Objetivo Podio! Hoy el equipo SAUNIER DUVAL PRODIR ha realizado una muy buena carrera. El joven Ángel Gómez formó parte de la primera escapada de la jornada y cuando este grupo fue alcanzado por el pelotón, pudo quedarse con sus compañeros de equipo para realizar un trabajo de grupo; no había menos de cuatro corredores de SAUNIER DUVAL PRODIR en la parte delantera del pelotón. Por supuesto Juan Manuel Gárate luchó por la general; hoy, una vez más, Rubén Lobato se mostró muy fuerte; en la última escalada estuvo en un pequeño grupo de cabeza y luego esperó a Gárate para llevarlo a la cima. Gárate acabó 6º la etapa y ahora ocupa la 5ª posición de la general pero el objetivo sigue siendo el mismo: ¡SUBIR AL PODIO! La etapa de mañana será una crono individual de 34km, para la cual Juan Manuel se siente bastante confiado.

COMUNICATI STAMPA DALLA CORSA El día positivo en Selle Italia - Colombia - Univer, con la llegada en subida al Limone Piemonte considera otra vez muchachos de Gianni Savio. Ivan Parra ha sido protagonista con el trabajo precioso en el favor de Josè Rujano en el "Colletto del Moro". En la subida final de Limone Piemonte el corredor venezolano ha sido el único a permanecer en la compañía de Gilberto Simoni a la búsqueda de Ivan bajo. El cosଠde Rujano ha ganado en segundo lugar preciosamente en todo el contendenti principal, haciendo un salto adentro clasifica al lugar de los terceros. Esta tarde que el venezolano es terceros adentro clasifica a 1' 24 ' '.
