Third
pack sprint, third stage win to ROBBIE at the Giro !!!
Stage 6 of the Giro, between
Busseto and Forli, distance 227 km.
This
rather flat stage was quite monotonous. Three men broke
away from the peloton after only 6 km, and made it nearly
up to the finish.
They
were Andoni Aranaga (Euskaltel-Euskadi), Sergiy
Matveyev (Ceramica Panaria-Navigare) and Christophe
Edaleine (Crédit Agricole). Their initial
gap of 2 reached up to 615.
The
peloton, led by a T-Mobile / Davitamon-Lotto, began
to reduce the gap in the second half of the distance.
The
three leaders rode 205 km ahead of the pack, but were
caught with 15 kilometres to go.
And
the following pack sprint saw the third stage win of our
Robbie McEwen in the 2006 Giro !!! Germany's
Olaf Pollack (T-Mobile) and Lithuania's Thomas
Vaitkus (Ag2R) were Robbies main contenders
!
Olaf
Pollack grabs the pink jersey from his team mate
Gonchar, and Robbie increases his lead at the points
classification.
All
sorts of congrats !!!

T-Mobile keeps it in the team: T-Mobiles Olaf
Pollack sprinted to second place on Fridays stage
6 to swap the pink jersey with his team mate Serhiy Honchar.
After 227 km from Busseto to Forlì
and a late surge to the line, Pollack placed second
behind Aussie Robbie McEwen. He was awarded
with a 12-second time bonus, which moved him into top position
on the GC. Ukrainian Honchar lies in second, two
seconds behind, while Jens Voigt (CSC) and Michael
Rogers (T-Mobile Team), both eight seconds behind.
Korff
crashes
"I
am very content. Within 24 hours we have the second team
member in the pink jersey. Thats really impressive,
said the sporting director Rudy Pevenage post-race.
"Olaf was
a little boxed in during the sprint and no longer had
André riding for him after his crash. Considering
this, the second place is a good result."
I
was shocked",
added Pollack. "With
1km to go, I realized that Korff had crashed and
that was my man, so I was left alone."
Korff
suffered painful abrasions in the crash in the final km.
"Fortunately, he didnt
break anything, Pevenage said.
Ullrich
as pacemaker
Up
until the finale, Jan Ullrich had been taking turns
with his team mates pulling at the front and keeping the
pace high. "Jan is coming
more and more into form. Well see in the next days
how hes holding up on the climbs,
said Pevenage.
After
only six km, the break of the day formed, consisting of
the Ukrainian Sergiy Matveyev (Panaria), the Frenchman
Christophe Edaleine (Crédit Agricole) and
Spaniard Andoni Aranaga (Euskaltel). That was fine
with T-Mobile, since none of the escapees posed
a real threat to Honchar. Halfway into the race, the breakaways
had a maximum gap of six minutes over the peloton on the
flat, dry and non-technical course.
Another
mass sprint showdown
After 206km, the days mammoth break was history
and the sprinter teams were busy keeping the main field
together on the remaining 15 km.
Even
with only 10 km to go, Ullrich was still in the thick
of things at the front. Preparing for the sprint, the
riders almost took up the entire road to fight for a good
position.
In
the final kilometre, the crash involving T-Mobiles
André Korff, occured. Meanwhile, in the sprint
showdown, Loddo attacked too early, then Vaitkus,
but McEwen powered around the Lithuanian for his
third stage. With a late surge, Pollack sprinted
to second place.
Saturdays
seventh stage is the longest of the 2006 Giro; a 236km-trek
from Cesena to Saltara featuring the first
leg-breaking climbs of this years corsa rosa. (mf)
Giornata
McEwen (3ª vittoria) davanti a Pollack
(nuova maglia rosa) e Vaitkus.

fasst Henn kurz zusammen. Der Leipziger errang nach einer
kräftezehrenden Aufholjagd immerhin noch den 11.
Platz.
Sieger
Gonchar.
