MCEWEN takes stage 2 at GIRO D'ITALIA !!!
Stage 2 of the Giro in Belgium, between Mons and Marcinelle,
distance 197 km.
The
stage is soon told: a group of 4 men broke away after
35 kilometres, and made a 7' gap.
After
100 km, our team, together Petacchi's Milram, put on the
coals, and the gap dwindled regularly. The four leaders
ware caught with 20 kilometres to go.
No
other breakaway was possible before Marcinelle,
where a nearly complete peloton sprinted for the stage
win. In the slightly ascending finish, nobody could stay
with our Robbie McEwen; 2nd was Germany's Olaf
Pollack (T-Mobile) and 3rd Italy's Paolo Bettini
(Quick.Step-Innergetic). There is no change to the general
classification; Paolo Savoldelli (Discovery Channel)
keeps the pink jersey.
Bags
of congrats !!!

Das
Team MILRAM bewies heute einmal wieder perfektes
Teamwork. Bei der zweiten Etappe der 89. Giro d´Italia
Italiener Roberto Bettini (Quickstep) erreichte
uomini blu-fucsia nellaccompagnare tranquillamente
Damiano Cunego fino al traguardo (15° allarrivo).
Tutti gli altri corridori della Lampre-Fondital hanno
terminato col gruppo principale.
In

A
day for the sprinters to be sure at the 89th edition of
the Giro d'Italia
as the Tour of Italy remains in Belgium
a light
rain greeted the 198 rider peloton as the race stays in
the unique host country for the first four stages before
heading back "home" on Wednesday. As is usually
the case, the day featured a long escape before the chase-and-catch
game played out and the expected field sprint ensued.
The
four men who provided the day's early entertainment were
Gabriele Missaglia (Selle Italia), Mickael Delage
(Française des Jeux), Beñat Albizuri
(Euskaltel-Euskadi), and Arnaud Labbe (Bouygues
Telecom). This quartet was gone from the 23 km mark and
saw a maximum lead of 6'18" 40 kms later before the
peloton took notice and started to ramp things up and
bring them back to the fold.
With
50 kms left in the day and not much else happening, the
lead was down to 2'32" and falling and the men down
the road were also not working as well together as they
had been. With 33 km left Missaglia left his escape
mates and only Albizuri bothered to go with him, the peloton
just about 1'30" and now charging.
With
19 kms to go and on a slight climb the escape was officially
done as the duo was absorbed by the Team Lotto lead
bunch. With a field sprint now definitely on tap all the
teams now came together, some like Lotto and Milram to
contest the statge while teams Discovery Channel and
CSC rallied around their GC hopefuls to protect them to
the finish line.
While
the day would be contested by the sprinters, Discovery
Channel was a force on front protecting race leader Paolo
Savoldelli as no less than Viatchslev Ekimov was on
point with Paolo in 3rd wheel as they went under the 5
km to go banner. As the riders came into Charleroi they
were challenged by plenty of technical turns and round
abouts. Team Milram for Petacchi put six men on
the front and looked to have everything in control as
they set up to launch "Ale Jet", but sitting
right on the Petacchi's wheel was the other key sprinter
of the day in Lotto's Robbie McEwen.
As
the race came home they were relieved to see a 1600m long
drag strip, perfect for a dominating sprint team like
Milram to set things up for the win. With 200m to go Petacchi
got the perfect set up, but McEwen sat perfectly
on the Italian sprinter's wheel and came around him to
take the stage win, as did two other sprint opportunists
in Pollack and Bettini. Petacchi would be
relegated to a disappointing fourth and Discovery Channel's
Paolo Savoldelli would celebrate his 33rd birthday
in his favorite color: the pink jersey of the leader of
the Giro d'Italia!
