QSI renner Juan Manuel Garate
Voigt liet Garate

Giro
Stage 19: Gentleman Voigt Says No Thanks, Basso Closer
to Victory
May
26, 2006 - Jens
Voigt watches Garate take Stage 19. "No
work, no win, that's easy," he said.
Team CSCs Jens Voigts sense of good
sportsmanship cost him a chance to win a stage Friday
in the hardest day while Ivan Basso widened his
lead with just two days left to go in the 2006 Giro
dItalia.
Voigt
didnt contest the victory at the end of the grueling
seven-hour, 221-kilometer 19th stage after riding all
day in the winning breakaway, and let Spanish rider Juan
Manuel Garate (Quick Step-Innergetic) slip ahead for
the victory.
Voigt
followed Garate as the pair rode alone up the brutally
steep final climb at Passo di San Pellegrino while
Basso finished eighth to add another 24 seconds
to his grip on the maglia rosa.
With
400 meters to go, Voigt shook Garates
hand and watched his rival take the victory. For Voigt,
it was simply the right thing to do.
No
work, no win, thats easy, Voigt
said at the finish line. There
would be no honor and I would have felt like I just flicked
him for his work.
Team
CSC once again rode text-book perfect tactics in a
dramatic stage across the heart of Italys towering
Dolomites and bolstered Bassos chances of
securing the teams first victory in a three-week
grand tour.
Bobby
Julich and Voigt slipped into the days
main breakaway of 19 riders at about 70 kilometers into
the stage, a move that helped take pressure off Team
CSC in the main pack and also positioned the pair
up the road to either help Basso or even go for the stage
victory.
The
team rode in harmony early on, keeping Basso protected
until the main climbs began. Julichs group
led the way over the days first of four climbs
the Staulanza climb at 100km and rolled past breathtaking
views of jagged, snow-covered peaks.
Heading
up the grueling Passo di Fedaia one of the
most storied climbs in all of cycling history also known
as Marmolada Julich lost the wheel
as Italian Fortunato Baliani (Panaria) tried in
vain to escape, but Voigt was able to hang in there.
We
always had to plan for the worst-case scenario and if
we only have Ivan, Cunego and Simoni coming
across, then we had me and Bobby up the road, maybe we
could have a chance to help out, Voigt
said. We wanted
to have some riders in the front. That was the plan.
No
one dared attack Basso so far from the finish and
the team pinned Volodymir Gustov, Nicki
Sorensen, Iñigo Cuesta and Carlos
Sastre ahead of Basso to intimidate any would-be
aggressors. The Basso group was about six minutes
behind the Voigt group over the Fedaia climb which
no longer included Julich.
Up
next came the spectacular Passo di Pordoi, with
Julich riding about two and a half minutes behind
the Voigt group while five Team CSC riders
led the charge in the maglia rosa group still about six
minutes back.
From
there it was a long downhill with Julich falling
back to the main maglia rosa group and the breakaway fighting
among themselves with Voigt holding steady.
The
lead group atrophied under the steep final climb, with
Voigt following moves by Tadej Valjavec and
Patxi Vila (both Lampre) and eventually Garate.
Voigt sat on Garates wheel, waiting in part
to see if Basso could bridge up from the previous
group.
When
Garate and Voigt hit the final kilometer,
it seemed obvious Voigt would be able to out-sprint the
lithe Spanish rider, but to the surprise of everyone,
gentlemanly Voigt stuck out his hand and then watched
him dash to victory.
Of
course I could have tried to go for it, but it was not
the situation to do that. I was in the group all day,
just sitting there, Voigt said.
Garate was strong
all day and he was good on the last climb and he held
off the group of Simoni, it was the right thing that he
wins.
The
decision was one Voigt made on his own.
I
would also prefer that we win, said
Team CSC manager Bjarne Riis. Jens
has been asking all week if he could attack, so we finally
let him be out there today. It was an impressive ride.
With
Voigt up the road, all Basso had to do was
stay with the strongest when attacks began in earnest.
Two-time winner Gilberto Simoni (Saunier Duval)
dropped everyone except Basso in a vain attempt to move
up to second place overall.
Basso
calmly rode across the line in eighth at 2:15 back of
Garate, but ahead of all of his overall rivals.
He expanded his lead to 6:07.
Its
obvious things are going well, but I absolutely refuse
to say the Giro is over, Basso
said. Tomorrow is a hard
day and the rivals are sure to attack. I will not relax
until the race finishes Sunday.
Saturdays
penultimate stage presents the final hurdle for Basso
and his quest to win the Giro. The four-climb, 211-kilometer
stage from Trento to Aprica hits the legendary climbs
over the Mortirolo and the Gavia, the highest point of
this years Giro at 2,618 meters.
We
never thought Basso would have a lead of more than
six minutes at this point of the race,
Riis said. The team
has demonstrated were the strongest and so has Basso.
Weve worked hard to get here and were very
satisfied.
Lampre-Fondital
in evidenza sulle Dolomiti
Lampre-Fondital
5°.
Lampre-Fondital
protagonist in the Dolomitic stage of Giro (Prodenone-San
Pellegrino).
Three
blu-fucsia athletes (Vila-Valjavec-Petrov) take
part in an active way in the principal breakaway of the
day, an action in which took part also the winner Garate
(2nd Voigt). Generous the contribute by the three Lampre-Fondital,
that obtained a 2nd place with Vila (gap of 1'21")
and a 4th place with Valjavec (1'51").
Good day also for Damiano Cunego, that cover the
most part the last climb with the duo Simoni-Basso: Damiano
reached the finish line in 12th position with a gap of
2'40" from the winner, and at only 25" from
Simoni and Basso. Cunego gained 3 positions in
the overall standing: he's now 5th.
It's important to underline that for the second consecutive
day Lampre-Fondital obtained the 1st place in the teams
standing.
Matthias
vorzeitig beenden muss.
