- El
corredor ruso del equipo Jazztel-Costa de Almería,
Serguei Smetanine, consiguió la victoria
en la décimo cuarta etapa de la Vuelta disputada
sobre 190,2 kilómetros entre Santander y Gijón.
Smetanine consiguió que el modesto equipo del
veterano director Miguel Moreno se llevase una
etapa en la ronda española y no diera opción
a los equipos de los velocistas que pretendían
volver a luchar todos juntos al sprint por el triunfo.
Pero en el alto del Gobernador, el ruso pisó el
“acelerador” con más fuerza y consiguió
llegar a las calles de Gijón que estaban repletas
de público. El joven madrileño Oscar
Laguna, del Relax-Fuenlabrada, volvió a estar
en la mejor escapada del día, pero tuvo que conformarse
con ser segundo. En el kilómetro 158 de carrera
se produjo una aparatosa caída en la que se vieron
envueltos unos cuarenta corredores. Salieron mal parados,
porque tuvieron que retirarse, Aitor González
de Galdeano, Iñigo Chaurreau y Jon
Odriozola. Otros muchos consiguieron llegar a la meta,
aunque muy tocados, como Gárate o Escartín.
Los médicos de la Vuelta estaban tratando a todos
aquellos que presentaban lesiones o heridas. Oscar
Sevilla, del Kelme-Costa Blanca, sigue de líder.

- More
than 40 riders have been involved in the massive crash
we saw today, the most tremendous one in this Vuelta a
España 2002. It has change the obvious ending of
the stage, because till that moment, the peloton controlled
by Fassa Bortolo was reducing the distance between
them and the riders ahead, Oscar Laguna and Serguei
Smetanine.
The
start, as usual, has been fast and the attempts to break
were continuous until the aforementioned men could gain
enough metres as to conform a breakaway. The bunch allowed
them to break as they were not ready to control every
single attempt to break away because that would have meant
a lot of effort and they cannot stop thinking about tomorrow.
But
as we have said before, nothing would have been the same
if that massive fall had not happened. One of the doctors
even said that this has been one of the worst massive
falls in the last Vueltas. More than 40 riders have been
involved in the fall and three riders, Inigo Chaurreau,
Jon Odriozola and Igor González de Galdeano,
had to be taken to hospital in an ambulance. It is probably
that because of this fall more than one rider had to abandon
tomorrow or in the following days as many of them have
arrived in not very good conditions at the finish line.
But
everyone´s attention is already focused on the Angliru
where they will arrive tomorrow and the weather is not
going to be a good ally. Besides, there is more than one
key point tomorrow. The descent from Alto del Cordal could
be a real danger if the rain turns up.

parte médico: Escartín, fractura de costilla
El
corredor del equipo Coast Fernando Escartín
(4) padece fractura de la novena costilla izquierda. El
corredor aragonés fue atendido en el hospital y
no podrá continuar en carrera. También ha
sido atendido el corredor Guillaume Auger (42),
del equipo BigMat, que padece contusión de la pala
iliaca izquierda y una herida en el tobillo izquierdo.
El informe ha sido facilitado por los doctores de la Vuelta,
Fernando Astorqui y Félix Cabezas.
Medical
report: Escartín broke one of his ribs
The
Coast rider, Fernando Escartín (4), has
broken his left ninth rib. The rider from Aragón
was assisted at the hospital and will have to abandon
the race. The rider Guillaume Auger (42), who rides
for Bigmat, has also been assisted by the doctors as he
has been injured on his left leg and ankle. The report
has been given by the Vuelta doctors, Fernando Astorqui
and Félix Cabeza.
