Liquigas-Bianchi:
«Protagonisti da Roubaix a Liegi».
Per
Backstedt, che domò il pavé nel
2004, è
una questione di polso.
Il
gigante svedese dolorante al polso destro dopo la caduta
nella Gent-Wevelgem
8
aprile 05
Flecha, Hushovd, Boonen e Van
Petegem. Mi aspetto una corsa controllata nelle
prime fasi da Quick Step e Discovery,
che faranno un gran lavoro per affrontare nelle condizioni
migliori i primi settori di pavé. Poi, come sempre,
il gruppo esploderà. Vedo larrivo
di un gruppetto in caso di giornata secca, mentre se
pioverà la selezione sarà molto più
severa. Potrebbero giocarsela due o tre corridori...»
La
Liquigas-Bianchi schiererà anche Albasini,
Gerosa, Ljungqvist, Loda, Righetto,
Sironi e Zanotti. Direttore sportivo
Dario Mariuzzo.
Le
caratteristiche dellinferno del Nord rendono la
Parigi-Roubaix una corsa unica da affrontare con
biciclette strutturate per assorbire le particolari
sollecitazioni valorizzando al massimo la potenza espressa
dallatleta. Liquigas-Bianchi correrà
con biciclette Bianchi che presentano linnovativo
sistema Structural Foam Injection che aumenta
la rigidità del telaio. In particolare, Magnus
Backstedt utilizzerà un telaio in titanio
su misura.
Ricordiamo
che domani pomeriggio alle 15,30 a Compiègne,
nello stand Primagaz, si terrà una conferenza
stampa del team Liquigas-Bianchi organizzata da Primagaz.
Liquigas-Bianchi:
«A Key Player From Roubaix to Liège».
2004
King of the Cobbles Sections Backstedt Has
to Cope With the Pain in His Wrist
The
Swedish giant has felt a pain in his right wrist since
the crash at Gent-Wevelgem
8
April 05
Liquigas-Bianchi is ready to be a key player
in the Northern Classics its riders like the most. Team
manager Roberto Amadio says that «we
are going to fight for the victory in all the next races
from Paris-Roubaix to Liège-Bastogne-Liège.
We are counting on Backstedt, Di Luca,
and Pellizotti».
Magnus
Backstedt, the last years king of the cobbles
sections, doesnt deny his ambitions despite the
physical trouble which could hinder him: «Paris-Roubaix
is unique and is more appealing to me than any other
race. I may call for an encore of the last years
victory: Im in excellent form and proved it last
Sunday at the Ronde van Vlaanderen and last Wednesday
at Gent-Wevelgem. Unfortunately, last Wednesday
I crashed knocking my right wrist. I immediately had
a X-ray to see if the wrist was fractured. It was not
but it is still painful and will be even more painful
on the cobbles sections. I will try not to think about
the pain and not to focus on it».
Backstedt
points out the most dangerous rivals: «Cancellara,
Flecha, Hushovd, Boonen, and Van
Petegem. I expect Quick Step and Discovery
will control the race in the first phases. They will
work hard to face in the best conditions the first cobbles
sections. Then, as usual, the group will burst.
If the weather is dry, a little group may cross the
finish line. In case of rain, the selection will be
very hard. Two or three riders could fight for the win...»
The
Liquigas-Bianchi will also line up Albasini,
Gerosa, Ljungqvist, Loda, Righetto,
Sironi, and Zanotti. Team manager Dario
Mariuzzo.
The
characteristics of Hell of the North makes Paris-Roubaix
unique. The riders bikes can resist many stresses
and allow athletes to offer the utmost in power and
performance. Liquigas-Bianchi will ride Bianchi
bikes using the Structural Foam Injection system
to increase the frame rigidity. In particular, Magnus
Backstedt will use a customized titanium frame.

T-Mobile
gives youth the nod
Paris
Roubaix is called l'Enfer du Nord - the Hell of
the North - and it's a race like no other, a unique
throwback to a time before tarmac. It will also be
a baptism of fire for the young Dutch neo-pro Bas
Giling, who will make his ProTour debut
in Sunday's 103rd edition of the tradition-steeped
race.
Giling steps in for the injured Andreas Klier.
The in-form Klier crashed out of Gent-Wevelgem
on Wednesday and his injuries have forced the hands
of the team management. Sporting director Mario Kummer:
"Bas has turned in some great performances in
recent weeks and he has earned his call-up. We have
total confidence in him."
'Wese'
leads the T-Mobile charge
Steffen
Wesemann spearheads the eight-man T-Mobile
line-up in the 259km trek from Compiegne to the
Belgian border. The veteran classics' specialist,
who abandoned the Tour of Flanders through
illness, skipped Wednesday's Gent-Wevelgem to
dedicate more time for intensive training sessions
with his coach Thomas Schediwie.
Joining 'Wese' and Giling on the stone torture
test over 26 stretches of cobbles in France's bleak
north-east are Rolf Aldag, Sergey Ivanov,
Stephan Schreck, Marcus Burghardt and
the sprint duo of Eric Baumann and Erik Zabel.
The 22-year-old Giling is not a complete newcomer
to France's other big race, however. He was only narrowly
beaten into second place here last season in the U23
event. So he knows how it feels to be rattled along
the feared cobbles at a high tempo.
Burghardt is the second neo-pro in the magenta
roster. The 21-year-old Saxon - the youngest of the
27 riders on T-Mobile's books - has been turning in
consistently strong performances in the last months.
And he is also no stranger to the cruel demands of
the 'Queen of the Classics' either. The young gun
finished fourth behind Giling is last year's
U23 event.
A cruel and tough lottery
The tiny cobbled farm tracks of Paris-Roubaix
are used for the rest of the year by farmers in tractors
to get to the sugar-beet fields, but everything has
its season and in April they welcome big time pro
racing. But it's not always a friendly welcome. The
tracks provide the ultimate test for man and his bike
and they are the setting for a cruel race, a lottery,
where luck often plays as much a role as team and
individual prowess. The strongest rider, the favourite,
can easily drop out of contention with a crash or
a puncture.
Boneshaking and dusty in the dry, the mud-caked tracks
are nearly impossible to ride when it's wet, with
wheels sliding and skidding everywhere. Cycling's
hard men will therefore be heartened by the knowledge
that the weather forecast for Sunday is not good and
a devilish slog through the cobbles, mud, wind
and rain is on the cards.
Last year Swedish powerhouse Magnus Backstedt
surprised most observers when he took victory in the
Roubaix velodrome. This year he can
look forward to the formidable challenge of 2003 winner
Peter van Petegem (Davitamon-Lotto), Tour
of Flanders winner Tom Boonen (Quick
Step) and American classics specialist George Hincapie
(Discovery Channel) among others.
No Arenberg 'trench'
Not featuring in this year's route is the fabled Arenberg
'trench'; a semi-sunken stretch of cobbles in the
middle of a dank forest. It is traditionally the toughest
part of the race, but has been deemed too dangerous
this time round.
The
T-Mobile roster:
Rolf Aldag (36), Eric Baumann (25) Marcus
Burghardt (21), Bas Giling (22/Netherlands),
Sergey Ivanov (30/Russia), Stephan Schreck
(26),
Steffen Wesemann (34) and Erik Zabel
(34)
T-Mobile Team sporting director Mario Kummer
and the Team-Manager
Walter Godefroot will be with the team.
