*First
George Hincapiewins the
hardest mountain stage of the Tour de France and then
Paolo Savoldelli takes the mountain-less
longest stage of the race? All this with Lance
Armstrong in command of the race but still without
a stage win? Crazy indeed, but thats why they race them
each day.
Incredibly
and to everybodys surprise, Savoldelli
today won the Discovery Channel teams third stage of
the Tour by taking the nearly 240 kilometer 17th stage from
Pau to Revel
in an exciting sprint finish from CSCs Kurt-Asle
Arvesen. On paper, it would have seemed a near impossibility
that a rider like Savoldelli,
the 2005 Tour of Italy champion, would come out on top of
the stage that featured four small climbs with none longer
than three kilometers and none more than a third category
ascent.
Savoldelli
nella fai finali
della corsa
Its
a fact that Ive had a great year, Savoldelli
told Reuters. Everything has
gone well. When I climbed onto the podium, I felt a great
emotion because of all the ceremony and the crowd. It was
something that had been missing in my career because the Tour
is the greatest race in the world, on the bike and off it.
For
the last year, everything has been going well for me since
I joined Discovery Channel. When were not leading the
Tour for Lance, we always manage to have one guy going
for the stage victory. The more I see Lance, the more I tell
myself there is only one like him. Hes on another planet.
"lui
è su un altro pianeta".
*Savoldelli,
along with teammate Chechu Rubiera were
part of a nearly 20-rider breakaway that at one point gained
23 minutes on the main field. With nobody in the break an
overall threat to Armstrongs race lead, they were given
the freedom to go for the win. The break split in two with
Paolo in the front group of eight and Chechu in rear group
of nine, so it was Savoldellis stage to win, should
it all work out. Clearly the strongest among the riders in
front, Savoldelli made a key move on the third category Cote
de St-Ferreol, a climb of 2.7 kms at 5.1%, and jockeyed with
Arvesen, Simons Gerren and Sebastian Hinault before catching
Arvesen at the line for the win.
*The
action behind the lead 17 riders got serious on the St-Ferreol
when who else Vinokourov
attacked and split the peloton with 10 riders emerging with
a gap Lance and the rest of the rivals, save a few.
The 10 that made the split 1st (Armstrong), 2nd (Basso),
3rd (Rasmussen), 4th (Ullrich), 5th (Mancebo), 6th (Leipheimer),
9th (Vino), 12th (Mazzolini), 13th (Popovych) and 18th (Hincapie).
The key riders who missed the move and lost 20 seconds at
the line were Evans (7th), Landis (8th), Moreau (10th) and
Jaksche (16th). Thus, when you add in Andreas Klodens
abandonment of the race today due to a fractured wrist
suffered yesterday in a crash the bottom half of the
top 10 in the GC moved around a bit with Vino jumping from
9th to 7th, Evans falling from 7th to 8th and Landis dropping
from 8th to 9th.
*The
move to put Savoldelli and Rubiera
up the road paid off in another way as well the Discovery
Channel team took over the team classification lead by 37
seconds over T-Mobile. Beginning the day second to T-Mobile
by almost 20 minutes (19:28), the team finished with Savoldelli
first and Rubiera 13th (at 3:14) with Popo finishing next
in 18th (at 22:28). T-Mobiles top three riders today
were Sevilla in sixth (at :51) and with Vino and Ullrich in
19th and 22nd, respectively, but way back in the Popo/Armstrong
group. With the team GC based upon each teams top three
finishers of the stage, the team gained the necessary time
to lead over T-Mobile.
*Towards
the end when the action was clearly heating up, Savoldelli
had huge problems with Hinault and gestured at the Frenchman
a few times after he allowed gaps to be created when the lead
group was going for the win.
*He
must have done this before; Savoldelli
really soaked up the adulation on the podium following his
win, smiling broadly and remaining up there for what seemed
double the time of the other riders.
*After
the stage, Armstrong told Reuters
It was surreal still
being 15 km from the finish and hearing over the radio that
Paolo had won the stage. We all looked at each other and asked
each other Did he just say that Paolo won the stage?
It was unbelievable and it just keeps on getting better.
On
the tactics of the day, Lance told Reuters
We wanted to put somebody in the break but two is better
than one so those guys jumped up there. We had enough guys
to control the race behind and just ride a steady tempo. We
thought other teams would pull sooner because of the team
classification and because of some guys losing their place
in the overall classification. But they never did until the
very end. I was happy because my team was great again. Popo
was there and George was there. At one point, I turned around
and there was less than 10 guys there and we had three.
*Prior
to French television picking up its live coverage at 2:25pm,
it ran a show featuring some of the most renowned crashes
in recent Tour de France memory. Yikes. In black and white
and color, each crash was tough to watch and when you
add in todays departure of last years runner-up
in Kloden following injuries suffered in a crash yesterday
the never over until its over and anything
can happen clichés dont seem so far off.
CIONI
PERDE LATTIMO FUGGENTE
bergamasco Paolo Savoldelli.
ANDRIY
GRIVKO QUINTO ALLA 17ª TAPPA DEL TOUR DE FRANCE
Côte de Capens, dimostrando una grande combattività;

Oggi
ho beccato la fuga della giornata. Dopo 40 Km siamo
andati via in 17,in un gruppo ben assortito. Se non
fossimo stati così numerosi sarebbe stato difficile
arrivare.
