24.04.2005 - Alexander Vinokourov notched up the T-Mobile Team's first season victory in Ans, Belgium, on Sunday, winning the 91st edition of the Liège-Bastogne-Liège classic in typically aggressive fashion. The gutsy Kazakh made the winning move, with German super-diesel Jens Voigt on the Côte de La Vecquee with around 50 kilometres to go, and impressively held off a chase group packed with race favourites all the way to the finish.

"Last year I finished third here and since then I have been dreaming about winning this race," quipped an ecstatic Vino post-race. "It is also great to secure the first season win for T-Mobile."

The pair's advantage hovered around the one minute mark for their entire breakaway, in part aided by a lack of cohesion in the rather oversized select group behind, which included a sitting and waiting Matthias Kessler. However, it was a master-class in aggressive riding that really sealed it for Kazakhstan's cycling superstar, who had clearly paid close attention to Voigt's powerful solo break at the 'Flèche' on Wednesday and knew what wheel to follow. "When I saw Voigt jump clear, I said to myself I have to get on his wheel. It either works out or it doesn't. With Kessler, we would have had another option. In the end we made it. "It is a very difficult race to win. I didn't want to leave it until too late."

Voigt and Vino continued to work together until the final kilometre, taking big turns at the front and pushing it to the limit on the climbs. Vino later paid tribute to the always enterprising Voigt: "Voigt is an incredible rider. Sitting behind him when he gets going is like riding in the slipstream of a Boeing."
