QUICK STEP CYCLING TEAM

NUYENS DOMINATES AT THE HET VOLK

Nick Nuyens26TH February 2005 – Nick Nuyens won today the Het Volk classic race that opened the Belgian racing season.

The young Quick Step athlete made his move almost 15 kilometres from the finish line gaining ground on the group chasing him arriving at a point where he had a 35” advantage over them.

“Initially I made my move to cover Tom BoonenNuyens explained - Tom and my teammates could have taken things calmly waiting for the final few kilometres”.

However, behind Nuyens the other members of the Quick Step team were doing a splendid covering job.

“When they advised me from the Team car that I had almost a 35” advantage I started to think, ok, you can do it. At that point I just went for it without ever looking over my shoulder. That said, if they’d have caught up with me Boonen would have been ready for the final sprint finish”.

Nuyens crossed the finish line with his arms high in the air 14” ahead of the group that was regulated by Tom Boonen and Steven De Jongh.

“Today Nuyens added – we proved to be an extremely united team ready to work as one to reach our objective even in difficult moments. I want to dedicate this win to the whole team, my wife Evy and my Uncle Willy, who passed away last year”.
